Session: Green Growth – A view from the political front line

Recent years have seen an expansion of commitments by forest country governments, corporations, donors, and investors to reduce deforestation and land-use emissions. However, these commitments have proven difficult to implement owing to the complex challenges of shifting from business-as-usual to a forest-friendly model of rural economic growth.

At our session at the Global Landscapes Forum, we will find out from three political leaders how they incorporate social and environmental decision-making into their rationale for industrial and economic development strategies. The session – to be moderated by the CEO of The Nature Conservancy, Mark Tercek – will bring together governors from the province of East Kalimantan in Indonesia, the state of Pará in Brazil and Yucatan in Mexico, who will talk about the political reality of putting green growth into practice. What choices do they face? What is the value proposition for forest-friendly development? What advice do they have for other leaders? The discussion will conclude with recommendations to government, corporations, and others – for building political support, financing and implementing green growth on this scale.
